Lenten Rose

lenten rose

We call this Lenten Rose, because it blooms in Lent. It's also named Helleborus. It blooms in my backyard every winter about this time. Last year it kept right on blooming half way through summer.

Scriptor Senex is on the other side of the pond and he has one blooming too. He calls it a Christmas Rose and I think his is a little bigger and brighter than mine.

Shutter Sisters has a 100 Step Challenge up. You are to get up and walk 100 steps and then take a picture. My 100 steps took me right to the back of the yard where this beauty lives. Nice, how that worked out.

Paper Quilt

paper quilt

One of my friends, who is an art teacher and has a kid's art studio in her house, invited my boys over for some art fun a couple weekends ago. They made these paper quilts which I just love. The sun is coming in through the lace curtains here, making shadow patterns over the colors.

Hyacinth & Family

hyacinth family

OK, I just can't help myself. Every time I go in the grocery store I have to buy some flowers. Usually I ignore these out of season forced blooms because we will have them growing in the garden in about two months. It seems like cheating to have them now when it is still winter. But this year I feel like I need all the blooming, the fresh color, and aroma therapy I can get. I was noticing how the portrait seems to be smiling at the flowers.

Red Sky in the morning...

For what seems to be God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and what seems to be God's weakness is stronger than human strength. Now remember what you were, my friends, when God called you. From the human point of view few of you were wise or powerful or of high social standing. -1Corinthians 12:25-26

In the Episcopal Church it is the feast day of Absolom Jones, (1746-1818) the first African American to be ordained. Along with Richard Allen he left the Episcopal church because of racism and segregation, form ing the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME).

DS lite (rest)

I found this in my 6 year old's pocket while doing the laundry. He wants a DS lite so he made his own. It's about 2"x3". The brown paper next to it is the stylus. His creativity and playfulness restore my sense of joy. I can feel the tension draining, just looking at this.

12 noon and I'm still in PJs, reading blogs. That's pretty restful, I think.

A Restful Drink

steaming cup of rest

When I lived in China in the mid 80s I learned to drink plain hot water. For centuries the common people in China could not afford tea leaves, had no interest in coffee, and routinely boiled their drinking water to purify it. Most people drank hot water as a matter of habit, for comfort, and for good health. We always had thermoses filled with hot water available and my students and friends encouraged me to drink it plain and simple. It is amazingly soothing and cleansing to drink plain hot water. If you like to drink cold water you should try it hot.

I am participating in the Shutter Sister's One Word project for February. My word of focus is "rest". I am trying to visualize restfulness and take photos of whatever comes to mind this month. What do you see as "rest"?

Breakfast (rest)

breakfast room

When I first bought this house and moved in, my friend, who is an artist, gave me advice about painting the walls. She said to think about how the colors would look next to each other if you were sitting at one end of the house and looking across the rooms. She also told me to pick some small object like a textile or picture that I liked with the color pallet that I wanted to have throughout the house. Then choose paint colors from that pallet for all the rooms.

I chose the quilt I was going to have in my bedroom, and painted every room in the house with colors from that quilt. When the house was finished being painted she laughed and said it reminded her of a Caribbean summer house. I like that.

These slow mornings of rest and recuperation I am just watching the light move across the color pallet.

Scented Geraniums at Rest

scented geranium at rest

Lying in my bed taking a long afternoon nap, I can roll over and gaze past the curled cat to these scented geraniums resting in the sunlight that streams in the window. Such great luxury.

Today starts the One Word project at Shutter Sisters, explained here on their blog:

The One Word Project. Many of you have already shared what your One Word will be for this month. If you haven't already and would like to join in, see complete details here. The word-of-the-month for February is yours to choose, and you can submit your One Word inspired photos to the Shutter Sisters Flickr group for your chance to be selected as the daily OWP featured photographer. February's OWP is graciously being sponsored by LENSBABY, so one lucky participant will win a Lensbaby Composer at the end of the month!

My word for the month of February is REST.
