Shutter Sisters is starting a new thing in the month of February. We are invited to chose one word to focus on each month and to post photos that represent that word for us. Tagged and shared in their flickr pool we will be able to follow each other's progress. This project is very exciting for me. The word I am choosing for February is "rest". Since I have recently had surgery and am spending a lot of time at home recovering everyone keeps telling me to "rest". I am going to explore what that means to me. For today it means reaching for the light.

Home Again

orange gerber daisy

Glad to be home from the hospital. These flowers cheered me immensely.

lilies & pink rose 2

I was so happy to have a bit of sun coming in the window and these tender blossoms to catch it.

Not feeling too good today but I'm really glad to be home. I missed you! Now I have a lot of catching up to do... Tell me what you did this week. What great photos have I missed? What have you discovered while I was gone? Get me back online please!

Frost on the windows

Putting things away up in the attic yesterday I noticed the frost on the windows. We've had the coldest nights in about 10 years lately.

I am not sure I will be posting photos much in the next week or so. I had a biopsy come back with a precancerous result last month and I am going to go into the hospital for surgery on Wednesday, Jan. 21. I am planning on taking my camera and netbook to the hospital so maybe I'll be taking some photos and viewing your blog. So far I haven't figured out how to upload photos from this Linux system netbook so I don't know if I can post for several days after Wednesday. They said it's three days in the hospital and the nurse told me I would be working hard on just recovery and probably wouldn't want to get on the computer. We'll see about that. ;)

Cheering them on

I saw the Eagles win

A couple days ago I had a parent teacher conference with Buddy's kindergarten teacher. She showed me all his writing workshop papers. He wrote here: "I saw the Eagles win!"

We never watch football but he has caught the fever!

Gifted three times

farida's snowdrop

Today when I came home from school I found this charming little snowdrop in my mailbox, send from Alkelda. Isn't she the sweetest?

Yesterday when I came home I found a lovely card from my aunt with a check in it. She told me to buy something soft and warm to comfort me. I am so blessed!

waiting for mom

The day before that when I got home I found a package on the porch. It was a handmade crocheted prayer shawl from my sister done in purple and pink sparkle yarn. I am wrapped in it right now. I am surrounded by love.

Bead bracelet

bead bracelet

This bead bracelet was hand made by a friend from school. We have a holiday gift exchange party where we mix up all the gifts and play a kind of blind lottery which involves some trading and switching. I ended up with this little gem. Isn't it fabulous?

These are some of the gift books I received for Christmas that I am planning to read in Jan. and Feb. Anyone read these yet?

Worry Stone

One of my friends at school gave me this worry stone this morning. I had it in my pocket when I went to the optometrist this afternoon. I decided to take advantage of the nice lighting on the glass cases while I waited to pick out my new glasses.

Outside the library we have snow flurries and a wicked wind. Inside, we have quiet and weak sunshine to soak up.

Knitting a necktie

blue necktie knit in round

I am knitting Buster a necktie. This is the first time I've tried this project. I've taken it out and restarted four times. I searched online for a free pattern and found several. I think I like this pattern the best. I am using four size 2 bamboo double pointed needles and knitting in the round. The yarn is an acrylic Bernat Satin sport weight (thin) in a darkish blue. I like the softness, the satin shine and the durability of it. I hope it will look nice enough for him to wear to work.

We made sweet potato casserole for the last night of Kwanzaa. OK, I was a day late but it still tasted great! I found the recipe here: daddyBstrong

Mall Carousel

carousel tiger

We indulged in the traditional New Year's Day spending of the gift cards. I hardly ever go to the mall so it's a real treat. Buddy got a second hand DS & game, which was one of top the things on his Christmas list. By pooling all the money and gift cards he got from relatives he had just enough. We rode the carousel, ate at the food court, and then went to the Toy store for Punkin's spending spree. He got a V-Tech game player on sale and two games (buy one, get one free). This is definitely the youngest I have ever put a kid on a video game. He loves it and wants to sleep with it! I am grateful to my brothers and sisters for their generosity towards my kids.

BTW, I know absolutely nothing about either of these game systems. Anyone have any tips? Do kids actually learn useful stuff from them?

the last sunset of 2008

last 2008 sunset new moon

Just below the moon is the planet Venus, shining as the evening star. A little lower on the horizon are Jupiter and Mercury. I wish I had a better camera to show you how beautiful it was. It's an unusually close alignment going on all this week. Read more here: Space.com and EarthSky.
