White Iris and Bricks

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?" -Luke 9:23-25

I find white and yellow flowers to be the hardest to photograph. Often in bright light the whites bleach out in a blur of light. I don't know how this one came out crisp. Maybe the shadows behind it? Or the angle of the lens deflected the shine and picked up more shadows? It's the auto setting on the camera so I think sometimes I get the right angle to let the camera open the shutter just enough but not too much. Other times, I shoot straight on in bright sun and it's too much light getting in. Anyone else know what's going on?

If you click through to Flickr and view this photo larger you can see the luminous sparkle of the petals. I love that about irises.

She Came Trembling

But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” -Luke 8:46-48

These are the seedlings Buddy planted in his kindergarten. We brought them home after the spring school open house. I have them in the sun room to protect them from the groundhogs that love to eat marigolds. Anyone know how to get rid of groundhogs?

Seven Demons

may 25 035

Soon afterward he [Jesus] went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means. -Luke 8:1-3

Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” -Luke 7:47-50

Do Not Weep

may 24 024

As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. -Luke 7:12-15

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” -Luke 2:13-15

I made this gluten-free chocolate cake for Mother's Day Sunday dinner. My parents and brother came over to celebrate. I roasted a chicken in my SchlemmerTopf (recipe for Chicken Oktoberfest at that link. Scroll down.) and made all the fixings. Good dinner.

When I was growing up my mom made Sunday dinner every week by putting a roast in the oven before we went to church and pealing potatoes as soon as we got home. She's the best mom in the world.

Mother's Day

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. -James 5:7-8

Mother's day flowers 5

I was trying to capture the late afternoon light on my Mother's Day flowers while dinner cooked. Buddy and Punkin came rushing in from the backyard with Punkin crying. He had a scratch from a thorn in the garden. Buddy insisted on getting the first aid box down and fixing up on his brother himself. He got a wet paper towel and washed it off. Then he put first aid cream on it and a band aid. I said, "You did a good job there! I didn't know you knew how to do that."

"Yes. I do know how because you taught me. You did it for me."

Happy Mother's Day to all my fellow first aid box owners!

steps from the car

Yesterday was a day of driving from one thing to another. I took a day off work to do everything and still ended up feeling stressed and stretched at the end of the day. In the morning I raced around from physical therapy to the Mother's Day tea at my youngest son's daycare to food shopping. I was sitting in the car in front of my house listening to an NPR story about food shortages and hunger in Haiti and how the US farm subsidies and rice aid make it impossible for farmers in Haiti to earn a living. My car was full to bursting with groceries. The rain was coming down steadily. The trees, grass and bushes around my front steps were a brilliant neon green reflected in the rain drops on the car window. I wondered if my camera would see what I was seeing.

I made potato salad for the first time of the season last night at dinner. I love it when I can snip some chive from my garden to make it really yummy. I also made rice flour yeast rolls so I can have a turkey sandwich for lunch today with more potato salad on the side. Picnic days are here! This chive flower looked a little washed out in the photo so I manipulated the brightness and contrast in MS Picture Editor.

I am afraid I am both rich and angry.

rag weed

Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation,
and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:9-11, 19-20

buttercups in morning light 2

I took that shot in the morning on the way out the door to school. Rushing past the buttercups on my front lawn I couldn't help but stop and snap a few photos. I was in the Auto mode, close-up focus and the camera adjusted automatically to aperture f/5.6, with the shutter speed at 1/125.
I was reading Shutter Sisters again yesterday and saw they were talking about capturing light so I offered this as an example.

In the evening, just before dinner I went out in the backyard with the boys and took more photos while they rode their bikes. I decided to play with shutter speed a little, setting the camera on the "S" mode. At this site shutter speed is explained: ‘the amount of time that the shutter is open’. Shutter speed is measured in seconds - or in most cases fractions of seconds. The bigger the denominator the faster the speed (ie 1/1000 is much faster than 1/30)."

may 5 048
Aperture: f/6.7
Shutter Speed: 45/10

may 5 025
Aperture: f/5.6
Shutter Speed: 55/10

may 5 036
Aperture: f/4.8
Shutter Speed: 45/10

I realized that my camera automatically adjusts the aperture for me if I change the shutter speed, and vice versa. I also noticed that leaving it in Auto the camera does the best job most of the time without my paying attention. But if I knew a particular effect I wanted to stress in a given situation I could manipulate the results by changing the speed and aperture if I got enough practice to know what I am doing. It's something to work on.

Learning about Aperture

They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. -2 Peter 2:19

may 4 046

After reading about using the A mode to adjust the aperture on my camera on a post at Shutter Sisters I decided to go outside and play around. First in the early morning, when it was misty:

drops on leaves

The way I understand it, "the smaller the number, the greater the hole", which means if you have a larger F stop the aperture opening on the camera is small and lets in less light. It narrows the depth of field. You get a focus on the center of the image but blur on the foreground and background.

may 4 025

With less light coming in the colors are muted. I went back outside later, when the sun was shining and discovered that the bright yellow flowers I always have a hard time capturing sharply are different with a higher aperture number:

at f/4:
may 4 055

at f/8:
may 4 057

You can read more about how to manipulate aperture at Shutter Sisters.
