Shared Harvest

peppers after frost, originally uploaded by cloudscome.

I took this picture in a community garden. The peppers have survived our first frost, but the leaves are shriveled and the vines soft.

As I was walking away an elderly gentleman came up and said hello. He was very gracious and friendly. He said he had seen me taking pictures of the peppers and I was welcome to take as many home as I wanted. I thanked him gratefully, thinking of the Chinese pork and peppers dish my boys love.

As I leaned down to pick them he turned away. He walked off muttering something that sounded like "Help yourself! You just have to be careful about something something something... you don't want mutter mutter mutter..."

What do you think he meant by that?
